Can a White Woman be a Black Feminist?: An Inquiry in Standpoint Epistemology
by Danielle M. LaSusa
Abstract
As a middle-class white woman who has an interest in furthering the Black feminist cause, I have wondered if I could ever legitimately call myself a Black feminist. In this paper, I explore this question in the context of Marxist materialism and standpoint epistemology as a means of answering my query. I identify potential social, practical, and epistemic barriers to my status as a Black feminist, and discuss the significance and implications of these barriers.
