The Intentional Activity of Referring: The Case of Hispanicsrose
by Ernesto Rosen
Abstract
Some argue that there are no races or ethnicities. Ethnic names like “Hispanics” or “African-Americans” do not refer to a distinct group of people. Others argue that ethnic names do refer to something real. I pick up on the anti-descriptive proposal Nuccetelli puts forth in her article on ethnic-group names. Nucettelli argues that since ethnic names such as “Hispanics” have no descriptive contents that are true of all its members it leads to reference failure. I argue ethnic names like “Hispanics” do not have a sense but they do have significance and we can use ethnic-group names to refer.
